How do you define beauty? And Confidence?

Beauty and confidence are tightly intertwined. I see beauty as an empty shell that needs to be filled with substance, such as confidence, kindness and emotional intelligence. I appreciate beauty in stillness and in movement as much as I appreciate it in symmetry and asymmetry. And most of all, the beauty in beauty is in its impermanence, something not definitive that can’t be tamed nor immortalized, but rather a continuous fluidity in life and in death.

What are the main challenges you had to overcome to get where you are today? Would you do that again?

Overcoming self-doubt and negative self-talk were definitely challenges. Those habits held me back from taking action and prevented me from doing what I loved.

Contemplation and meditation helped me to nurture the self-love and acceptance I needed to build my confidence and go after what really mattered.

What are the accomplishments or successes you’ve achieved that you’re particularly proud of?

Although I pass as able-bodied, I have a physical disability. I was told - and believed - that I could never achieve certain physical goals like running or demanding sports. Once I set my mind to something though, I work hard to achieve it; and this was also true of changing my mindset from someone who couldn’t to someone who could. Today I can say that I’m proud to be running eight kilometers on a regular basis, and to be enjoying other essential pleasures such as an Ashtavakrasana pose in my yoga practice.

If you could look back and talk to your younger self, what advice would you give her?

Don’t be afraid to take risks, stop dwelling on regrets, and “Who cares what people think!”.

What are the 3 top pieces of advice you would give to any Unapology beauty out there to reach whatever goal she sets for herself?

Practice, practice, and practice some more to get what YOU want. Fake it until you make it, it’s totally worth it! Last, “Who cares what people think?”.

Who are the women you look up to and why? What characteristics do/did they possess?

My mother, because she has the ‘hustler’ gene. I’m impressed with everything that she has accomplished in life. She’s a true model of a self-made immigrant woman of color. She sets her sights on what SHE wants, then goes for it.

Also, Adrienne Rich. Her essays changed my life and opened my mind to infinite possibilities. She was a bold woman who chose to write about controversial topics as they related to her life and to her reality. Her courage to live and share her internal questioning and thoughts without fear of being ostracized or censored are what inspired me to be less afraid of living a true, authentic life.

Finally, Maya Angelou, for unveiling herself and sharing the intimate details of her life in her autobiography; as well as for capturing my imagination with her fictional works.

What does Unapology mean to you?

STOP giving power to apologies, which are, I believe, empty when used profusely. It’s about overcoming the imposture syndrome and living life to the fullest. Stop living a life that is limited by societal expectations, and cultivate your own ambitions.

Well said! Women need to start owning how amazing they are and stop making excuses for themselves. It takes a great amount of strenght to overcome your fears and be able to share your personal experience with the public. Keep inspiring people you don’t know are looking up to you and never stop fighting. The world needs more female leaders like you.
